Why McDonald’s In France Doesn’t Feel Like Fast Food
Another reason McDonald’s works so well here is that the food is locally sourced and very high quality. As we all know, France is the land of haute cuisine. But it’s also the land of good cuisine. The French appreciate quality in any category, even fast food. Restaurateurs in France know they’ll go bust if they offer substandard products. I’ve had friends from India tell me that the Indian restaurants in Paris are among the world’s best.
There is a (as yet substantiated to my knowledge) story that the French arm of McD’s is actually not owned by the mother company, going along the lines that a Frenchman went to the US seeking to purchase a Franchise license. HQ had already conducted market research and concluded that the French would not eat their product and had written the country off. The Frenchman decided to go for broke and purchased the full rights to the country and HQ sold it to him on the assumption that he would fail miserably so only kept the rights to trademarks, copyright, and image management in place without the usual requirements for McD U, logistics and products.
It seems a bit of a urban myth, but if true, would explain the menu and produce choices that every other arm of McD’s seems to follow.
Would love to know either way if anyone has some evidence?
