“This is the critical decade. If we don’t get the curves turned around this decade we will cross those lines,” said Will Steffen, executive director of the Australian National University’s climate change institute, speaking at a conference in London.
Despite this sense of urgency, a new global climate treaty forcing the world’s biggest polluters, such as the United States and China, to curb emissions will only be agreed on by 2015 - to enter into force in 2020.
For ice sheets - huge refrigerators that slow down the warming of the planet - the tipping point has probably already been passed, Steffen said. The West Antarctic ice sheet has shrunk over the last decade and the Greenland ice sheet has lost around 200 cubic km (48 cubic miles) a year since the 1990s.
Most climate estimates agree the Amazon rainforest will get drier as the planet warms. Mass tree deaths caused by drought have raised fears it is on the verge of a tipping point, when it will stop absorbing emissions and add to them instead.
Around 1.6 billion tonnes of carbon were lost in 2005 from the rainforest and 2.2 billion tonnes in 2010, which has undone about 10 years of carbon sink activity, Steffen said.
One of the most worrying and unknown thresholds is the Siberian permafrost, which stores frozen carbon in the soil away from the atmosphere.
“There is about 1,600 billion tonnes of carbon there - about twice the amount in the atmosphere today - and the northern high latitudes are experiencing the most severe temperature change of any part of the planet,” he said.
In a worst case scenario, 30 to 63 billion tonnes of carbon a year could be released by 2040, rising to 232 to 380 billion tonnes by 2100. This compares to around 10 billion tonnes of CO2 released by fossil fuel use each year.
Increased CO2 in the atmosphere has also turned oceans more acidic as they absorb it. In the past 200 years, ocean acidification has happened at a speed not seen for around 60 million years, said Carol Turley at Plymouth Marine Laboratory.
This threatens coral reef development and could lead to the extinction of some species within decades, as well as to an increase in the number of predators.
Bolded emphasis mine. This is about the 50th post I’ve posted or reblogged about the climate “doomsday,” which should be the biggest story everyday but magically isn’t.
Actually, the permafrosts of Siberia, and the northern arctic circle hold huge amounts of methane. Which may very well be billions of CO2e (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent) but reporting it as CO2 softens the danger of what that much methane effectively released like a popping balloon into the atmosphere will mean.
You know, I read that, and want to know something? I cry shenanigans!
Maybe it’s just me and waking up on the wrong side of the bed …. but it still sounded a lot like “wah, wah, wah it’s not me, it’s society!” followed by “it’s not me, it’s my penis!”
Here’s an idea: be responsible for your own actions and stop making selfish, vindictive reasons up for acting like a self-grandising, privilege expecting, elitist jerk.
The world owes you nothing. Society owes you nothing. Women are not your prize and your penis is not that special.
Now, go cry me a river and when you’re done waking up to yourself, be a real human being and respect those around you … and maybe, you’ll get some love and respect right back.
I take the middle ground here. There are some good insights in the article as to how our culture shapes us and our expectations, even if those insights are presented somewhat tongue in cheek, and not explored very deeply.
The culture of consumerism ultimately tends toward appealing to our basest nature. That nature is fine for survival of the species, but not for civilization. Culture shapes individuals. Young men and women are constantly bombarded by messages about who to be and how to treat each other.
But individuals also shape culture. It is only by raising our voices again and again that we can cultivate change. Young men need role models. They need stories and movies and songs that tell them that there is another way to be, and that it leads to a better life for them AND a better world for others. I could rant at length about this.
Ultimately, the only person I can change is myself. How can I contribute to creating a culture where men grow up surrounded by examples of how to every human being with respect, while still being able to find live, companionship, and yes, sex?
I don’t have the answer, but asking the question is a good start.
Actually Jack, you’re right. My rational mind and even the ODD mind do agree with you on all but one and half points.
Individuals do indeed shape culture. We participate in a variety of cultural memes and have the collective ability to make wholesale and foundation shaking changes in the very fabric of our society. So. let’s make sure the memes we participate in, the stories we tell and the role models we put up are the ones that we can be proud of.
So, I disagree that you’re the only one you can change.
You have a son who you influence. There are both direct and indirect lessons you can teach him. Your actions are the loudest by far, and the loudest action of all is having the bravery to stand up for what’s right. Every time you do, he can see real bravery. But the indirect lessons about privilege and expectations are often learned at home around the toybox.
How do we contribute to creating a culture where men grow up surrounded by examples of being able to find love, companionship, and yes, sex? By reminding them that we all want and need these things and that by treating all human beings with respect, not only will we get it, but it will be better than one borne of manipulation or that other crap.
Asking the question is a good start, but now let’s put legs on the talk and start this journey.
My "had an iPad for 8 days" review of apps that are must haves ...
Yeah, I know … somebody is late to the party … also, seriously, 8 days?
It surprises people that as a versed IT consultant, geek, academic and self-confessed gadget junky that I didn’t buy the first or even second generation iPad.
The initial release just didn’t do it for me … basically, it was an iPhone in a larger format and without the phone function. The second gen version, once again, failed to add any real argument for buying it. In fact, Android tablets have been making a far better argument for the tablet over the notebook.
That said, a friend gave me his iPad 2 to use for just over a week. I am now about to purchase one.

I may be known to have told people this many times. I recall one PA doing the infamous blonde hair twirl and giggle with me once only to get a face full of me doing the “don’t you pull the blonde bimbo card with me young lady!”
Three factories that made so-called “pink slime” beef filler have shut down since public outcry about the amonia-treated substance began last month, The Associated Press reported Monday.
Beef Products Inc. spokesman Craig Letch told AP that only one factory in the country, located in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, is still producing the stuff. Three others, in Texas, Iowa and Kansas, have reportedly been shut down.
The product, known as “lean, finely textured beef” to industry insiders, is comprised of connective tissue and other less-than-edible pieces of cows, which are mashed into a slimy, pink substance and treated with ammonia gas to kill off bacteria.
It is then added to ground beef as filler, to increase the product’s weight and, thereby, it’s price.
The goo was nicknamed “pink slime” by a U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) scientists who blew the whistle once regulators in the Bush Sr. administration began allowing it in the human food supply. It was previously only considered suitable for products like dog food.
A public outcry over its use began after the U.S. government was revealed to have purchased tons of the stuff for use in school lunches. Soon thereafter, USDA whistleblowers alleged that “pink slime” had become so prevalent that it existed in up to 70 percent of ground beef sold in the U.S.
Since the outcry began, several major fast food chains have said they would no longer use the meat filler in their food products, and the USDA has lifted rules that required schools to use it.
That’s the ticket … so the secret to getting things done is not to sell the benefits to adult voters, but to their kids?
There’s a lesson for future Health care reform ads …
It doesn’t mean I hate LGBT community. Because I am a supporter.
It doesn’t mean I force women to give birth. Because I never will.

Let me tell you some things.
I used to investigate child abuse and neglect. I can tell you how to stop the vast majority of abortion in the world.
First, make knowledge and access to contraception widely available. Start teaching kids before they hit puberty. Teach them about domestic violence and coercion, and teach them not to coerce and rape. Create a strong, loving community where women and girls feel safe and supported in times of need. Because guess what? They aren’t. You know what happens to babies born under such circumstances? They get hurt, unnecessarily. They get sick, unnecessarily. They get removed from parents who love them but who are unprepared for the burden of a child. Resources? Honey, we try. There aren’t enough resources anywhere. There are waiting lists, and promises, and maybes. If the government itself can’t hook people up, what makes you think an impoverished single mom can handle it?
Abolish poverty. Do you have any idea how much childcare costs? Daycare can cost as much or more than monthly rent. They may be inadequately staffed. Getting a private nanny is a nice idea, but they don’t come cheap either. Relatives? Do they own a car? Does the bus run at the right times? Do they have jobs of their own they need to work just to keep the lights on? Are they going to stick around until you get off you convenience store shift at 4 AM? Do they have criminal histories that will make them unsuitable as caregivers when CPS pokes around? You gonna pay for that? Who’s going to pay for that?
End rape. I know your type errs on the side of blaming the woman, but I’ve seen little girls who’ve barely gotten their periods pregnant because somebody thought raping preteens was an awesome idea. You want to put a child through that? Or someone with a mental or physical inability for whom pregnancy would be frightening, painful or even life-threatening? I’ve seen nonverbal kids who had their feet sliced up by caregivers for no fucking reason at all, you think sexual abuse doesn’t happen either?
You say there’s lots of couples who want to adopt. Kiddo, what they want to adopt are healthy white babies, preferably untainted by the wombs and genetics of women with alcohol or drug dependencies. I’ve seen the kids they don’t want, who almost no one wants. You people focus only on the happy pink babies, the gigglers, the ones who grow and grow with no trouble. Those are not the kids who linger in foster care. Those are certainly not the older kids and teenagers who age out of foster care and then are thrown out in the streets, usually with an array of medical and mental health issues. Are they too old to count?
And yeah, I’ve seen the babies, little hand-sized things barely clinging to life. There’s no glory, no wonder there. There is no wonder in a pregnant woman with five dollars to her name, so deep in depression you wonder if she’ll be alive in a week. Therapy costs money. Medicine costs money. Food, clothes, electricity cost money. Government assistance is a pittance; poverty drives women and girls into situations where they are forced to rely on people who abuse them to survive. (I’ve been up in more hospitals than I can count.)
In each and every dark pit of desperation, I have never seen a pro-lifer. I ain’t never seen them babysitting, scrubbing floors, bringing over goods, handing mom $50 bucks a month or driving her to the pediatrician. I ain’t never seen them sitting up for hours with an autistic child who screams and rages so his mother can get some sleep while she rests up from working 14-hour days. I don’t see them fixing leaks in rundown houses or playing with a kid while the police prepare to interview her about her sexual abuse. They’re not paying for the funerals of babies and children who died after birth, when they truly do become independent organisms. And the crazy thing is they think they’ve already done their job, because the child was born!
Aphids give birth, girl. It’s no miracle. You want to speak for the weak? Get off your high horse and get your hands dirty helping the poor, the isolated, the ill and mentally ill women and mothers and their children who already breathe the dirty air. You are doing nothing, absolutely nothing, for children. You don’t have a flea’s comprehension of injustice. You are not doing shit for life until you get in there and fight that darkness. Until you understand that abortion is salvation in a world like ours. Does that sound too hard? Do you really think suffering post-birth is more permissible, less worthy of outrage?
“Pro-life” is simply a philosophy in which the only life worth saving is the one that can be saved by punishing a woman.
I don’t remember you much … So i guess that’s one good thing to think about all the shit that you are and will continue to go through will one day be mostly forgotten behind a psychological wall of emotional trauma, but hey, forgotten is forgotten right? It’ll get worse before it gets better, but three things to know:
1. It will end.
2. You are stronger than you think.
3. It gets better.
p.s. I doubt you can hear me, but Just in case you can, let me know by cutting a cross into your left ankle and pick the scab until it scars. As soon as I get the message I will then send through winning lotto numbers, instructions for opening an account in Switzerland and buying super appreciating land.
